The United Rentals DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds were back in action Saturday night at The Legendary House Of Power. This was the first time back since April 3rd for the Big Blocks and this time it was a part of the Joey Falanga Memorial Big Block Derby. The night kicked off with the Frank Stevens & Sons Roofing Hot Lap Hero Bonus. “With great risk comes great reward.” The Hot Lap Hero Bonus would have the fastest Big Block driver in Hot Laps pull a pill to invert heat race lineups. The fastest driver would end up being defending Track Champion Matt Sheppard. Sheppard would pull a four car invert for heats with wins for the night collected by Anthony Perrego, Tyler Jashembowski, and Billy Decker.
Saturday Big Block events at OCFS play big into the new Big Block points system. The "Win and You're In" feature makes outside invading drivers more easily eligible for the $25K champions prize. With many new Thursday night United Rental DIRTcar Big Block Modified races on the schedule, invaders from other Saturday night tracks, or series, can come looking for a win and a shot at the title. Saturday's become important for OCFS's regular drivers who are racing for the championship. Bucking that assumption however, opening night saw local regular (and multi-time, multi-divisional winner) Tommy Meier take it away from invaders like Mat Williamson, Stewart Friesen and Max McLaughlin.
THE 31ST LAP WILL BE OPEN FOR BUSINESS ON SATURDAY MAY 1 - JOEY FALANGA MEMORIAL BIG BLOCK DERBY
After a lost season in 2020, Maxwell's 31st Lap Tavern is returning to (almost) regular operation! There will still be some restrictions on capacity, but you will be able to belly up to the bar and order a drink before enjoying it in the company of your friends!
Saturday evening, May 1 will find the United Rentals DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds racing for a $4,000-to-win 30-lap feature in their second point chase race of the 2021 season. Presented by M. Falanga Trucking, the Joey Falanga Memorial Big Block Derby has several additional twists to add to the evening’s racing excitement. The Falangas are longtime members of the Orange County racing family. The evening’s activities honor Joey, who lost his life in a highway accident.
The H.O Penn Cat 358 Modified division was in the spotlight Saturday night with a boosted pay out of $3,000 to win. 31 358 competitors entered for the evening with Joey Bonetti, Billy Dunn, and Bob McGannon collecting the heat race wins and all cars starting the night's event. After a redraw, Joey Bonetti and Jimmy Spellmon would sit on the front row for the 30 lap show down. As the green dropped Jimmy Spellmon would get out to the lead early, however just a few laps later Joey Bonetti and Tyler Boniface would go around the #28 and take control up front.
Saturday evening, April 24 will find the H.O. Penn Small-Block Modifieds racing for a $3,000-to-win 25-lap feature that is sure to attract several outside invading teams and drivers. In addition, the Wicked Truck Worx Back-to-Back Bonus is in effect, adding $300 to the winner’s purse should he or she score a repeat victory from the previous race meet. Only “show up” points will be awarded for this event. Qualifying races will set the field for the big feature race.
