6/5/2021 - Krummel Wins the Arkel Motors Sportsman Triple Crown with 2 Feat Wins

6/5/2021 - Krummel Wins the Arkel Motors Sportsman Triple Crown with 2 Feat Wins

For the first time, the Arkel Motors Sportsman division took center stage at The Legendary House Of Power Saturday evening. The Triple Crown event, which consisted of three twenty lap feature events, had a lot at stake for the competitors including three full purses, three full sets of points, a guaranteed starting spot for Eastern States Weekend, free Hoosier Tires, and $900 in bonus money. 47 drivers entered in for competition which incorporated five qualifying heats and one b main. Jared LaBagh, Bobby Flood, Brian Krummel, Jeff Hulseapple, and Joey Bonetti collected the heat race wins, and defending track champion Tanner VanDoren claimed the B-Main win.
For the first portion of the Wolf 97.3 97.7  Triple Crown event Joe Conklin and Cody Higbie brought the field to the green, but a caution would immediately restart the event. When the field went green again, it was Joe Conklin taking the lead with Higbie in tow, however it was Joey Bonetti making early moves advancing to third by lap two. Bonetti wouldn't stop there, he would work his way around the #97c of Higbie and then around the #J73 of Conklin taking over the lead of the event. Bonetti would get out front, leaving the battle for position within the top five. Higbie and Conklin would go at war for the second place, which Higbie would take the rights over on lap seven as still out front Bonetti’s lead began to grow longer. Jake Bedell, Bobby Flood, and Brian Krummel were on the move, with the trio going three wide out of turn two where Krummel would find his way around both Bedell and Flood and find his way into 4th. Krummel would then work his way into third by lap thirteen. It was Bonetti leading Higbie and Krummel by lap fifteen, but lapped traffic in the event was about to become a playing part in the event. Bonetti caught the tail side of the field which allowed Higbie and Krummel to get in closer on the #20B. As laps counted down, it was “BK Speed” Brian Krummel who would maneuver around Higbie on lap eighteen and Bonetti on lap nineteen within lapped traffic and pick up the first leg of the Triple Crown Event. Krummel would have the responsibility of his fate and many others as each feature winner would pick an invert pill in victory lane, inverting the field for the following feature within the Triple Crown. Krummel would pull a fifteen.
The second 20 lap feature after the fifteen car invert, would put Jordan Lawrence and Danny Maher on the front row. At the drop of the green it was Lawrence taking charge over former Street Stock competitor Maher. As Lawrence got out front, it was defending track champion Tanner VanDoren who would quickly take over second. VanDoren however, wasn’t going to get away easy, as Maher would hang right with there with the #6 machine. Teenager, and feature event winner this year, Josh Allen would move into fourth and try and make moves on Maher and VanDoren. It was a few laps later that all eyes were towards the mid pack where the bright orange #38 of Jared LaBagh began to come alive. LaBagh using the top side would get around Johnny Bockhorn before a caution would be displayed for the #26J of Bob Jashembowski who would make the jump to regular Sportsman from the Rookie division.
Jordan Lawrence who had a decent lead over Tanner VanDoren would now have to pull even with the Pennsylvania hot shoe. Lawrence your leader would bring the field to the green but the #6 of VanDoren was all over the #7L of Lawrence. Youngster Josh Allen would get on by Dan Maher for third before battling with VanDoren for second. On the restart, it was still all eyes on the #38 of LaBagh. Jared would use the top side of the speedway to first pass Danny Maher for fourth, then around Josh Allen for third, pull up next to VanDoren and claim the rights to second, before getting on by leader Jordan Lawrence by lap fifteen. As LaBagh proved the outside was the way to go, Tanner VanDoren switched lanes and used the top side to get on by Jordan Lawrence for second, however LaBagh would get out front and never be challenged again claiming the victory for event number two. LaBagh would also be pressured with deciding the fate of the field by pulling the invert pill, inverting eleventh on down for event three.
In the third and final event, Joey Bonetti and Jeff Hulseapple made up the front row. It wasn’t long before the first of two red flags of the evening would be displayed. A pile up at the entrance to turn one collected many cars including Pat Mann, Ed Owens, Cody Higbie, Tom Burakowski, and Jimmy Devitt. As the field got going again, “The Butler Bullet” Jake Bedell would lead for the first time of the night. Bedell maintained his lead for three laps until “BK Speed” Brian Krummel would gain the rights to the lead on lap four. Lap seven saw the second and final red flag of the evening. After a caution, a restart situation was lined up, but a second major pile up in turn one brought out the red. Bob Jashembowski, Jeff Higham, Cody Higbie, Johnny Bockhorn and many others were involved. When the field went green again, “BK Speed” maintained his lead. Krummel was able to advance further out front, but second feature winner of the evening, Jared LaBagh was on the move to the front. LaBagh would work his way into the top five managing to get around Gary Edwards Jr. and Jake Bedell before a lap thirteen caution was displayed and be in third position. On the restart, Krummel was in the lead but it was LaBagh who went around Bobby Flood and into second. LaBagh would get right near Krummel, but Krummel proved to be too strong. It was the veteran Brian Krummel who would be named the Triple Crown Champ and in doing so, Krummel is now a guaranteed start for Eastern States Weekend in October. Krummel also would be rewarded with the Wicked Truck Worx back-to-back bonus.
In the NAPA North East Parts Group 15 lap Street Stock feature it was former track champion Charlie Donald and long time OCFS competitor Ron Constable on the front row. Donald would take the top spot at the green but in Street Stock fashion, seven cars were fighting the top two spots. The first of many cautions, which isn't normal for the group, would be displayed as Ron Constable spun in turn four collecting Mike Vigiletti. On the restart it was Donald and Walt Henry out front. It was then that the Cole Trickle look-alike car piloted by Dillon Gannon would take over the top spot. Another caution would fly thereafter for the #191 of New Jersey’s Jack Beaumont. There were multiple cautions after this one, and many lead changes. Dillon Gannon, who was the leader, cut a tire on lap six and it ended his chances at a podium finish. Bob Sleight Jr who campaigned for the lead also had mechanical issues ending his night and Walt Henry who was the leader seemed to get mixed up towards the end of the race ruining his chances to be the winner. When it was all said and done, former track champion Mike Vigiletti would drag race to the line with Jimmy Hajkowski, where Vigiletti would be the winner. Ryan Modiano would snag his first podium finish, beating Walt Henry to the line as well for third.
The Precision Hydraulic and Oil 15 lap Rookie Sportsman feature had Kasey Hufcut and Nick Giardini on the front row. Hufcut jumped the initial start, which put him back two spots and moved Brett Welsowski to the front. Giardini would take the lead over Weslowski at the start and led up until a caution came out for Mark Connoly Jr who was in trouble in turn four. At the same time, Brett Weslowski’s night was over as suspension issues halted the racer's efforts. Giardini and feature winner this season Mike Giuliano would restart up front. Giuliano would take the lead from Giardini this time and keep moving. It was then that the #89 of Dyaln Madsen would begin to advance forward. Madsen would get next to the #399 of Giardini before getting on by and charging to the Giuliano #51. On lap twelve, Dylan Madsen would make the strong pass in turn three on Giuliano and never look back, becoming a repeat winner and collecting the Wicked Truck Worx back-to-back bonus.
