6/12/2021 - Matt Sheppard Scores Feature Win Number 2

Mike Sparta Trucking & Dave’s Racing Collectibles presented the ever so popular annual Nostalgia Night Saturday evening. A night exactly where almost everyone returns home for a great night of racing action accompanied by the largest autograph session The House Of Power has to offer. The memories, the stories, the icons you name it, and its mentioned during Nostalgia Night. This year was the return of Nostalgia Night after the Covid-19 Pandemic, and it was a glorious one.
The United Rentals DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds were back in action with a stout group of competitors ready for action. Twenty Seven entrants were slated for heat events in which the wins were collected by Bobby Hentschel, Billy Decker, and Anthony Perrego. When the field of grueling Modifieds hit the 5/8th mile for their 30 lap main event, it was “Mega Money” Mat Williamson and Billy VanInwegen on the front row. At the wave of the green, it was Canadian racer Mat Williamson leading the way with “Billy V” up on the top side in tow. As Williamson had open track in front of him, VanInwegen was left to do battle with “Big Brother” Bob McGannon. McGannon would get the #4V and be on the charge for the Behrents Speed Shop #3M of Williamson.
Eighth place starter “Super Matt” Matt Sheppard would waste no time before cracking into the top five. Sheppard quickly mixed it up with “The Ant Man” Anthony Perrego taking over the fourth position right before the first caution was displayed for an incident in turn four involving Bobby Hentschel. St. Catharines Ontario native Mat Williamson and Bob McGannon would bring the field to the green on the restart. Williamson was in charge, but it was “Super Matt” who would get on by “Big Brother” Bob McGannon to take over the second spot. The next yellow flag was presented for “The Ageless One” Richie Eurich. The next restart would put Williamson alongside Sheppard. As the green waved Williamson was out front, but by the exit of turn two, “Super Matt” would use the outside lane and go around “Mega Money”. Behind the lead duo, it was consistent battling for the remainder of the top five. Two veterans of the sport, “The Waldwick Warrior” Tommy Meier and “The Thrilla From Unadilla” Billy Decker would mix it up, both looking to advance.
A lap fifteen caution would slow things down, as issues with Mahwah NJ competitor Donnie Wilson would array. With the next restart, Sheppard maintained his lead over Williamson. “The Sensational One” Jimmy Horton would work his way into the mix after starting in twentieth position, however another yellow would come out, this time for debris in turn three. This restart still had the strong running Sheppard out front with Williamson in tow, but Jimmy Horton would get into the fourth position. Laps counted down with Sheppard out to a decent lead over Williamson, and on the final lap when Sheppard was looking for checkereds, it was a yellow that waved. This caution would set up for one last time Mat Williamson to grab the win and lock himself into the championship hunt. When the green waved on the final restart, Sheppard stayed out front, but it was former track champion Jimmy Horton, who would get around the #3m of Williamson taking over position two. In the end, defending track champion Matt Sheppard was too strong to dethrone, and claimed another victory at The Legendary House Of Power.
The Arkel Motors Sportsman division had over thirty entries for the evening with a returning Joey Bruning, Joey Bonetti, Jaime Yannone, and Bobby Flood in a Tom Perrego Nostalgic Throwback #2 taking heat race victories. Cody Higbie would find himself victorious in the consolation event, locking himself and 5 others into the 20 lap feature event.
Jaime Yannone and Pat Mann made up row one for the feature event. Yannone, no stranger to OCFS, got right out front at the start. Mann who started second, was uprooted from his spot as the Halmar International #15M of Danny Morgiewicz took over second with Lem Atkins and Charlie Loiodice following suit. Yannone, out front, began to get stronger as time progressed leaving the rest of the field to do battle for what seemed like just second position. “The Butler Bullet” Jake Bedell who is always fast, started utilizing the top side of the speedway to catch right up to Pat Mann for fifth. Bedell would make the pass on Mann, and wouldn’t stop there. Bedell would work his way around Loiodice for fourth and then Lem Atkins for third. As “The Butler Bullet '' was living up to his nickname, it was all Yannone out front. Yannone had built a huge lead on Morgiewicz who was in second place. Morgiewciz however, wouldn’t hold on to second for too long, as Bedell got on by Morgiewicz by lap thirteen.
Out front, Yannone would have to deal with lapped traffic. Yannone who’s a long time competitor on the 5/8th mile would have three lapped cars to deal with but as soon as Yannone caught the lapped traffic a caution would come out for issues with Jeff Hulseapple and Charlie Loiodice. Right before the caution came out, strong signs of smoke came from the back of the #395 of Bedell. The final restart had Yannone’s lead dissipated and right side by side with Bedell. As the green dropped Yannone shot off like a rocket, but the signs of smoke from Bedell definitely was apparent that something went wrong as Bedell fell back. Joey Bonetti and Gary Edwards Jr. took advantage of the issues with the #395 of Bedell and grabbed second and third position. Jared LaBagh also worked his way around Bedell to take over fourth. As Yannone was out front, Bonetti was reeling him in. Bonetti would work his way right up to Yannone, and on the final lap in turn three, Bonetti would manage to get on by the #21 of Yannone and grabbed a feature win for the 2021 season.
