5/15/2021 - John Lieto, Jeff Hulseapple and Jim Hajkowski Celebrate Victories

Escape PowerSports Plus & H.O Penn Cat presented a full card of racing on Saturday night including action from the H.O Penn Cat 358 Modified division. After four qualifying heat events and a consi, whose winners were Mike Kolka, Johnny Lieto, Pat Reiser, Anthony Perrego, and Tyler Boniface, it would be “The Judge” Johnny Lieto and Patrick Reiser starting front row for the feature event. At the initial start of the 30 lap affair a caution would be displayed involving Joey Bonetti, Danny Creeden, and Richie Eurich.

Once cleared, it was a complete restart. Lieto would grab the lead with Reiser in tow. It was short lived as another caution would present itself a couple of laps later for issues involving Joey Bonetti on the back stretch. At the next restart Lieto would still be in command, but another caution would come out for Anthony Perrego. Lieto would still be at power of the event, but with this restart, “The Mayor” Mike Kolka would take advantage of the start and get on by the #33R of Pat Reiser. However once Kolka got on by, the #12 of teenager Ryan McCartney would get on by Reiser and Kolka and take over second place. A caution thereafter would be displayed for the #17J of Matt Janiak.

Lieto and McCartney would refire again with Lieto out front. This start would find the #26 of Corey Cormier and the #22 of Tanner VanDoren making moves. Cormier would take over third position as VanDoren would stay steady wheeling it on the highside of the speedway. In the caution plagued event, the yellow was waved for an incident with Kirk Horton in turn two. On the next start mayhem would strike going down the backstretch resulting in the night's only red flag. A track blocking pile up would involve at least a third of the event's competitors ending the night for Geneva NY’s Kevin Root.

On the final restart, it was all “The Judge” Johnny Lieto. Lieto led the way with McCartney still in tow. The top five in the event, Lieto, McCartney, Cormier, VanDoren, and Anthony Perrego would separate themselves from the remainder of the field. Perrego and VanDoren would battle for laps, until VanDoren would be able to make his way on by the #26 of Cormier in third. McCartney through everything but the kitchen sink at the #33 of Lieto, but in the end “The Judge” ruled the field and held on to pick up his first victory in 358 competition. “It’s been a long time Tim. This is my first Small Block win. This car is the car we won with in Big Blocks in 2015. Starting up front helped.” Expressed Lieto in victory lane.

The Arkel Motors 20 lap Sportsman feature kicked off with former Pro Stock Champion Bobby Waters Jr and Dylan Smith bringing the field to the green. Dylan Smith would get out front, but it was Sparta Trucking’s Johnny Bockhorn taking over the rights to second place out of turn two. Ryan Neiger and Jake Bedell would quickly find their way up into the mix, getting on by Waters and dueling for third position. The duel was cut short as a caution for Jared Miller would restack the field.
Race leader Dylan Smith would lead Johnny Bockhorn to the green. As Smith had the advantage, behind him was a pack of grueling Sportsman competitors charging to the front.  Joey Bonetti would get around the #5N of Ryan Neiger but also would work his way on by the #395 of Jake Bedell and take over third. It was then all sights set on the #97 of Johnny Bockhorn for Bonetti. Bonetti who was in between both Mike Sparta Trucking teammates would attempt to get on by Bockhorn but a caution for Aiden Elliot and Jared Miller would put a halt on his efforts.

Dylan Smith and Johnny Bockhorn remained out front with Smith leading the way on the restart, however it was short lived. Bonetti, who was hot on the wheel before the caution, would carry his momentum to this restart and take over the lead from Dylan Smith. Bonetti would increase the lead once out front, but Bonetti wasn’t the only advancing driver in the field, as Jeff Hulseapple was on the move. Hulseapple who started 13th was up into the top five. Jake Bedell and his teammate Johnny Bockhorn would duke it out for second with Hulseapple approaching the pair. It was a three wide pass out of turn two for Hulseapple as he would work his way around the pair of New Jersey drivers and take over second.
A late race caution would spoil the lead Bonetti developed. With two to go, Bonetti and Hulseapple would come to the green with Bonetti out front. Hulseapple, who hasn't finished outside the top five in any race this season, would then use the highside groove to get on by Bonetti and garner the lead. It would be dual checkers for Hulseapple as he would collect his first win of the 2021 season. “ We had an awesome car tonight. Hats off to Joey. He’s an excellent racer. If we didn't get that final caution we would've had second.” Expressed and excited Hulseapple.

It was veteran racer Charlie Donald and up-and-comer Ryan Modiano leading the way for the 15 lap Northeast Autoparts Group feature event. Donald took the lead at the start but it wasn’t for long as former track champion Jimmy Hajkowski got on by the #32 of Donald and took over the lead. The first and only caution came when former 358 racer of seasons gone by, John Tucker, spun out in turn two. On the restart it was Hajkowski leading Donald. Donald would feel the pressure from Dylan Gannon, and Gannon would get the advantage and go on by. The top six cars would all stay as close as can be, switching positions frequently. Bob Sleight Jr. made his way into the mix a few laps later by eventually passing Modiano, Walt Henry, and eventually pulling side by side with Gannon. In the end none of the contenders were strong enough to dethrone Hajkowski. Sleight however, managed to get on by Gannon to take over second. “ Tim we got to do the Polish Victory Lap. There is a good field of drivers this season. This wins for my brother who passed away this week.” Expressed an emotional Hajkowski in victory lane.
